HOUSTON, TEXAS (Pietro D. Pitts, Energy Analytics Institute, 27.Jan.2025) — The Port of Corpus Christi and its customers moved 206.5mn tons through the Corpus Christi Ship Channel in 2024.
The tonnage is a new high mark driven by increases in crude oil and dry bulk commodities, including agricultural products, the Port announced 27 Jan. 2025 in an official statement.
Port customers also ended 2024 with record quarterly tonnage (54mn tons) in the fourth-quarter 2024 (4Q:24), up 4.3% compared to the 4Q:23 and up 1.9% sequentially compared to 3Q:24.
In the 4Q:24, the leading commodities included crude oil, refined products and liquefied natural gas (LNG). In 2024, crude oil shipments rose 3.5% to 130.5mn tons compared to 2023, while dry bulk and agricultural goods increased 8.1% and 38.7%, respectively.
“The new annual tonnage record is 1.7% higher than the previous record set in 2023, marking the seventh consecutive record year set by Port of Corpus Christi customers,” the Port said in the statement.
Completion of the fourth and final phase of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project is still slated for early-2025. Upon completion, the Coastal Bend region will be home to the most improved waterway on the Gulf Coast, from Texas to Florida, with a deeper (54ft Mean Lower Low Water) and wider (530ft) ship channel with additional barge shelves, the Port said.
