(Energy Analytics Institute, 14.Apr.2022) — Ecuador inaugurated its first electric vehicle fast charging station in Cuenca, Azuay on 12 April 2022 with an initial investment of over $80,000.

The deal is part of an inter-institutional cooperation agreement between the Centrosur Regional Electric Company and the University of Cuenca, Ecuador’s Ministry of Energy and Mines announced 14 April 2022 in an official statement.

The fast charging station has a capacity of 50 kilowatts and can accommodate up to three vehicles simultaneously through three different connectors. The charging time per vehicle will depend on its autonomy. For example, a vehicle with a 30% battery will take between 12 to 20 minutes to reach a charge level of approximately 80%.

The charging station is part of Ecuador’s energy transition and efficiency push and will contribute to improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of Cuenca by encouraging electricity for mobility and reducing CO2 pollution, the ministry said.
