BELIZE CITY, BELIZE (Aaron Simonsky, Energy Analytics Institute, 17.Jan.2025) — Nigeria formally joined BRICS as a partner country of the grouping.

“With the world’s sixth-largest population—and Africa’s largest—as well as being one of the continent’s major economies, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS,” the Brazilian government, which is the pro tempore presidency of BRICS, said 17 Jan. 2025 in an official statement.

“It plays an active role in strengthening South-South cooperation and in reforming global governance—issues that are top priorities during Brazil’s current presidency,” the Brazilian government said.

In 2006, an initial group of major economic countries was formed, giving rise to a grouping that incorporated Brazil, Russia, India and China. Some years later, in 2011, on the occasion of the 3rd Summit, South Africa became part of the group, which then adopted the acronym BRICS.

Nigeria becomes the 9th partner country of BRICS, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. This partner-country category was created at the 16th BRICS Summit, held in Kazan in Oct. 2024.
