(Piero Stewart, Energy Analytics Institute, 25.Dec.2024) — Natural gas production in Trinidad and Tobago averaged 2.497 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in Sep. 2024, down 7.2% sequentially compared to 2.691 Bcf/d in Aug. 2024, the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) announced in its most recent ‘Consolidated Monthly Bulletins.’
Gas production in Sep. 2024 is down 1.9% compared to 2.545 Bcf/d in Jan. 2024, the MEEI said in its bulletin released on 12 Dec. 2024 that presents data that spans from Jan. 2024-Sep. 2024.
In the Trinidad gas space, production is dominated by BPTT, which was responsible for 48% of Trinidad’s gas production in Sep. 2024. Thereafter, the largest gas producers are Shell, EOG Resources, and Woodside Energy and in that order.

Combined, BPTT, Shell, EOG and Woodside were responsible for 2.383 Bcf/d or 95% of Trinidad’s gas production in Sep. 2024, according to data compiled by Energy Analytics Institute (EAI) from MEEI’s bulletin.
It should be noted that Trinidad’s gas production peaked at 4.515 Bcf/d in Feb. 2010, according to MEEI data. That’s to say, Trinidad’s gas production in Sep. 2024 is down 44.7% compared to Feb. 2010.
Trinidad’s source gas issue
Trinidad continues to suffer from a scarcity of gas to fully anchor its small twin-island economy.
In Trinidad, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector is the largest user of gas. The LNG sector’s utilization percentage was 42% in Sep. 2024, driven by the feedgas needs of the massive Atlantic LNG export facility, which recently announced a long-awaited restructuring agreement. Thereafter, other main sectors that use gas in Trinidad include: methanol, ammonia, and power.
However, these 4 main sectors in Trinidad have been hampered by a scarcity of gas. And, a number of plants have been closed owing to this lack of gas feedstock. Recent deals between the governments of Trinidad and neighboring Venezuela hold promise for the twin-island country to import gas from offshore Venezuela that is currently stranded.
