Woodside: small steps in a positive direction in Mexico

HOUSTON, TEXAS (By Pietro D. Pitts, Editores Latin Petroleum, 16.Sep.2026, Words: 363) — The month of Sep. 2026 marked an important milestone for Woodside Energy in Mexico amid the first visit of Liz Westcott to the country as CEO.

During her trip to Mexico, Woodside and state-owned PEMEX signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the exploration of potential future deepwater opportunities in the Gulf of Mexico.

This is a result of Woodside’s long-standing collaboration on the deepwater Trion project and reflects the strength of the Australian company’s relationship and shared goals for creating values and meeting Mexico’s energy goals.

Trion’s first oil is still slated to flow in 2028, according to Trion.

Senate, Sheinbaum, SENER

At the Mexican Senate, Woodside executives were welcomed by members of the Energy Commission. On said occasion, Woodside had the opportunity to update them on the progress of Trion and the company’s approach to support the Plan México and the communities in Tamaulipas, Woodside executive not authorized to speak to the media, announced on 16 Sep. 2026 in a post on social media.

At the historical National Palace, Woodside executives had the privilege to meet with Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

In the company of Secretary of Energy (SENER) head Luz Elena González Escobar and PEMEX CEO Juan Carlos Carpio Fragoso, Woodside executives also discussed the significant progress being made on Trion and the benefits the investment will bring to Mexico and the state of Tamaulipas.

Woodside executives also shared the company’s commitment to strengthening local capabilities through local supplier development.

Finally, Woodside executives were welcomed by Australian Ambassador to Mexico H.E. Crispin Conroy AM in a reception at the official residence.

With members of the Mexican government, representatives of Gobierno del Estado de Tamaulipas, universities, and colleagues from business chambers, Woodside executives discussed the company’s relationship that both countries (Mexico and Australia) enjoy, and the bright future ahead following the 60 years bilateral trade relationship.
