CERAWeek: Energy Analytics Institute (EAI) Launches Battery Recollection Initiative in Mexico

HOUSTON, TEXAS (Ofelia Paredes, Energy Analytics Institute, 9.Mar.2025) — Energy Analytics Institute (EAI), covering the Latin America and Caribbean energy space now for almost a quarter of a century, announced the launch of a new battery recollection initiative in Mexico City, Mexico during CERAWeek by S&P Global. This, as part of EAI’s push into Mexico’s media space focused on the energy sector.

The battery initiative replicates a very popular battery recollection initiative launched in the early 2010s in Caracas, Venezuela, which focused on educating the general public about the benefits of recollecting batteries under a slogan of “Recycle, Reduce and Reuse,” EAI director Pietro Donatello Pitts said in an official statement on 9 Mar. 2025.

The initiative in Mexico City aims to collect used batteries in local communities at K-12 schools, cyber cafes, and other strategic deposit locations. Once collected, the batteries will be disposed of at specific drop off locations belonging to Grupo IMU in Mexico City. Over 400 drop off locations exist for the collection of AA, AAA, C, D, and CD batteries to afterwards be recycled.

One of the main reasons behind the recollection initiative is to reduce the number of batteries that end up in landfills like most trash. There are varied negative impacts of throwing batteries away instead of recycling them as allowing toxic materials in batteries to enter water sources and cause pollution, while accidental or improper incineration can release toxic fumes into the air. Additionally, if improperly discarded, certain batteries can explode and thus cause injury and property damage.

“The launch of the battery recollection initiative in Atizapán located in the outskirts of Mexico City falls under or EAI NRG ED initiative that centers around educating citizens about the broader implications and benefits of a circular economy,” Pitts said. “While this initiative is specific to the recollection of old batteries, it also crossing into the realm of electronic waste or ewaste, another area EAI plans to refocus on again in the not to distant future in Mexico.”

EAI’s NRG ED initiative

EAI’s “energy education initiative,” also known as “NRG ED,” is structured to work with K-12 schools, community colleges, 4-year colleges and universities, workforce training programs, communities and businesses with the aim of promoting ways to reduce fossil fuel energy usage and waste in favor of usage of renewable energies.

EAI aims to further its initiative through educational consultancy, development and distribution of education and training materials, and promotion of debate and discussion regarding the energy industry and renewable energies to reduce the carbon footprint left by non-renewable energy resources.
