HOUSTON, TEXAS (Editors at Energy Analytics Institute, 17.Jan.2025) — In a move to advance energy sovereignty, state-owned Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has an eye on producing enough fertilizer to cover 80% of fertilizer demand in Mexico, according to Secretariat of Energy (SENER) head Luz Elena González Escobar.

Currently, Pemex produces enough fertilizer to cover 33% of the national demand for fertilizers, González said 17 Jan. 2025 during the mañanera or early morning media briefing hosted by Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo in Acapulco, Guerrero.

González said the plan was for Pemex’ fertilizer production to surpass 60% and then even reach 80%, without giving a timeframe.

“Our objective during 2024-2030 is for Pemex to produce more fertilizer so that we can distribute fertilizer that is good, cheap and produced in our country so that we are not constantly importing [it],” Sheinbaum said during the event on national television.
