(Energy Analytics Institute, 29.Oct.2024) — Vaca Muerta shale formation producers Tecpetrol and Pampa Energía are reportedly moving forward with plans to utilize the Bahía Blanca port area recently abandoned by state-owned YPF SA and its Malaysian counterpart Petronas in favor of another port at Río Negro.
Tecpetrol, Argentina’s main shale gas producer, plans to use the Bahía Blanca port for a modular onshore LNG plant, while Pampa Energía plans to build a fertilizer plant there. Both projects would use Vaca Muerta feedgas, Argentina daily Más E Energía, also known as +e, reported 29 Oct. 2024 on its website.
Bahía Blanca Port Management Consortium President Santiago Mandolesi Burgos told +e that both initiatives would be located in a Bahía Blanca port area that spans some 1,500 hectares and which was previous reserved by YPF as the site for its mega LNG project.
Tecpetrol is reported in the Front-end engineering design (FEED) stage. The FEED will be completed by mid-2025.
The first module for Tecpetrol’s modular LNG plant is said to have a production capacity of between 2-4 million tonnes per year (mtpa) of LNG. In successive stages the capacity could be increased as new players join the project, according to +e.
Pampa Energía, the energy holding company led by Marcelo Mindlin, plans to build an urea plant, which would have a production capacity of 1.5 million tons per year and would require an investment of between $2bn-$3bn, according to +e.
