Sheinbaum temporarily eliminates 10% import tariff on auto parts

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (By Fidencio Casillas, Editores Latin Petroleum, 18.Oct.2026, Words: 185) — Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo temporarily eliminated the 10% tariff on the import of auto parts and components intended for automobile assembly.

This, as part of a measure that will be in effect for 5 years and aims to attract new production lines to the country, El Financiero reported on 18 Oct. 2026.

The decree, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), modifies the Tariff of the General Import and Export Tax Law and establishes an exemption for goods classified under tariff heading 9803.00.01, used by companies authorized to assemble and manufacture vehicles.

“The temporary exemption from tariffs applicable to the importation of goods classified under tariff heading 9803.00.01 will reduce the costs of establishing and operating new automotive projects, incentivizing the installation of production lines in Mexico (…) and strengthening national production chains, in accordance with the objectives set forth in Plan Mexico,” the decree states.
