CARACAS, VENEZUELA (By Piero Stewart, Energy Analytics Institute, 24.Jun.2026, Words: 272) — Venezuela’s interim president Venezuela Delcy Rodríguez announced contingency measures in response to 2 major earthquakes (7.2 and 7.5 magnitude), followed by at least 20 aftershocks.
These earthquakes have caused serious damage in several regions, including the Capital District, Miranda State, La Guaira State, Aragua, Carabobo, and Falcón, she announced on 24 Jun. 2026 during an evening presser.
Rodríguez clarified that, despite the impact, public services continue in most of the country, although gas and electricity have been temporarily suspended in affected areas.
Classes and non-essential work activities have also been suspended in the impacted regions; however, she said the public and private health network has been activated to care for the injured, and the evacuation of severely damaged homes has been ordered.
Rodríguez also announced the declaration of a state of emergency and the formation of a general staff to coordinate the humanitarian response. The command of this group will be headed by major general Juan Ernesto Sulbarán Quintero, who has extensive experience in handling critical situations of this nature.

Rodríguez indicated the general staff will also include: the sectoral vice presidents for politics, citizen security and peace, Diosdado Cabello; for services and public works, Juan José Ramírez; for social and territorial socialism, Héctor Rodríguez; and for economy and finance, Calixto Ortega.
Furthermore, the interim president announced activation of the VenApp application so citizens can report missing persons or situations related to their homes. This platform is already connected to the general staff to address the emergency.
