MEXICO CITY, MEXICO and HOUSTON, TEXAS (By Fidencio Casillas with assistance from Pietro D. Pitts, Energy Analytics Institute, 8.Feb.2026, Words: 407) — Mexico is sending humanitarian aid to the people of Cuba via 2 Mexican Navy ships.

This, after US president Donald Trump announced his government would impose tariffs on countries sending oil or fuels to the island nation, which is largest island in the Caribbean.

“The people of Mexico maintain their tradition of solidarity with the peoples of Latin America, and particularly with the people of Cuba,” Mexico’s government announced on 8 Feb. 2026 in an official statement.

Likewise, the Secretariat of the Navy reports that, through the Mexican Navy, humanitarian aid is being sent to Cuba via the logistics support ships Papaloapan and Isla Holbox.

Both ships depart today from the port of Veracruz with a cargo of more than 814 tons of food supplies destined for the civilian population of Cuba. The supplies from the central naval region were concentrated at the dock of the National Port System Administration (Asipona) in Veracruz, from where the corresponding shipments were loaded.

“We report that more than 1,500 tons of powdered milk and beans are still pending shipment. With these actions, the government of Mexico reaffirms the humanist principles and solidarity that guide it, as well as its commitment to international cooperation among nations, especially with those who, in situations of emergency and vulnerability, require humanitarian aid. Cuba and Mexico are sister nations, heirs to a long history of solidarity that we honor today,” the government said.
