MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (Fidencio Casillas, Energy Analytics Institute, 10.Apr.2025) — Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo instructed the Secretaries of Agriculture and Rural Development and Foreign Affairs as well as the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, to immediately contact the Ministry of Agriculture and the US Department of State regarding a statement issued by US president Donald Trump regarding monies owed to the US by Mexico for water purchases.
Trump has threatened Mexico again with tariffs for Mexico’s procurement of water from Texas.
Sheinbaum’s instructions come after a comprehensive proposal was sent to the Undersecretary of the United States Department of State to address the shipment of water from Texas within the framework of the 1944 treaty, which includes very short-term actions, Sheinbaum announced on 10 Apr. 2025 in an official statement.
