BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA (Steve Stewart, Energy Analytics Institute, 11.Feb.2025) — Gross US liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports are forecast to rise in 2025 for the first time in 2 years, according to recent data published by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
US LNG exports are forecast to average 14 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in 2025, up 17% compared to 12 Bcf/d in 2024, and then rise 16% to 16.2 Bcf/d in 2026 compared to 2025, the EIA announced 11 Feb. 2025 in its Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO).
US LNG exports averaged 12 Bcf/d in 2023, according to EIA.
According to EIA data from 2 Jan. 2025, US liquefaction projects under construction and expected to add to the total US LNG export volumes between 2025-2026 include:
— Corpus Christi Liquefaction Stage 3, Trains 1-7 (1.32 Bcf/d baseload nameplate capacity, 1.51 Bcf/d peak nameplate capacity, in service date Jan. 2025);
— Plaquemines LNG Phase 2, Trains 19-36 (1.30 Bcf/d baseload, 1.58 Bcf/d peak, Sep. 2025);
— Golden Pass Train 1 (0.68 Bcf/d baseload, 0.80 Bcf/d peak, 1H 2026); and
— Golden Pass Train 2 (0.68 Bcf/d baseload, 0.80 Bcf/d peak, 1H 2026).
In 2027, more US liquefaction capacity under construction is expected to come online including:
— Golden Pass Train 3 (0.68 Bcf/d baseload, 0.80 Bcf/d peak, 1H 2027);
— Port Arthur LNG Phase 1, Trains 1-2 (1.58 Bcf/d baseload, 1.78 Bcf/d peak; 2027);
— Rio Grande LNG Phase 1, Train 1 (0.72 Bcf/d baseload, 0.77 Bcf/d peak; 2027); and
— Rio Grande LNG Phase 1, Train 2 (0.72 Bcf/d baseload, 0.77 Bcf/d peak; 2027).
Growth in US LNG exports will be anchored by robust US gas production that is forecast to average 114.7 Bcf/d in 2025 and 117.9 Bcf/d in 2026. This compares to 113.1 Bcf/d in 2024, according to the EIA.
