HOUSTON, TEXAS (Editors at Energy Analytics Institute, 21.Jan.2025) — Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo said that US President Donald Trump’s remarks regarding changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico doesn’t change the name to be used by Mexico, which is still the Gulf of Mexico.

Sheinbaum, speaking 21 Jan. 2025 during her daily mañanera or morning briefing with the media, said it was important to read the US decree that said the US would rename the part of the Gulf of Mexico in its continental platform to the Gulf of America.

“For us it continues to be the Gulf of Mexico and for the entire world it continues being the Gulf of Mexico,” Sheinbaum said.

Regarding other decrees signed by Trump on 20 Jan. 2025 in his first day in office, Sheinbaum said her government would always act in defense of Mexico’s “sovereignty and independence.”
