(Energy Analytics Institute, 19.Sep.2022) — A lightning strike at the oxidation and water treatment lagoon of PDVSA’s Puerto La Cruz Refinery on 19 September 2022 didn’t impact the operations of the refinery, Venezuela’s Oil Minister Tareck El Aissami said during a telephone interview broadcast by the news channel Venezolana de Televisión.

The minister said the incident was caused “by an atmospheric phenomenon” and that the operations of the refinery, including the production of gasoline, weren’t impacted.

“None of the facilities, tanks, or plants of the refinery have been compromised,” El Aissami said in the interview, of which details were published on PDVSA’s website. The fire was eventually put out, the official later said.
