(Energy Analytics Institute, 22.Jun.2021) — Venezuelan economist José Toro Hardy said it was unclear when additional Iranian tankers carrying gasoline would reach the South American country’s coasts.

Venezuela could encounter another diesel shortage in coming months; hence, reason Hardy said it was urgent to try to prepare for the shortage due to its link to Venezuela’s food insecurity, daily newspaper El Nacional reported on 22 June 2021.

Diesel is essential for the agricultural sector as tractors use the fuel for food production or for the transfer of foods. Diesel is also used by many power-generation plants.

Venezuela’s ongoing fuel scarcity is in part due to ongoing issues at six refineries owned by state company Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), but also since much of the diesel produced in Venezuela is still being sent to Cuba.
