(Energy Analytics Institute, 18.Aug.2020) — EP PetroEcuador exported tons of industrial waste from the Esmeraldas Refinery for final disposal at treatment plants in France and with all the necessary permits and under strict security protocols.
“It has been intense work to achieve export of this waste,” announced PetroEcuador general manager Pablo Flores 18 August 2020 in a company statement.
“We invested $7.9 million to eliminate these environmental liabilities at Esmeraldas and we will continue with all good environmental practices to have a more efficient and less polluting operations,” Flores said.

Previously, technicians from contractor Suez-Ecuambiente carried out the transfer of these chemicals from the facilities of the refining center to the Esmeraldas port prior to shipment, PetroEcuador said in the statement.
Industrial waste is mainly made up of spent caustic soda and diethanolamine (DEA), which cannot be processed and disposed of in Ecuador, the company said.
