Gato Negro LNG expands Manzanillo LNG export project

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (By Fidencio Casillas, Energy Analytics Institute, 10.Sep.2025, Words: 188) — Gato Negro Manzanillo LNG announced plans to expand its natural gas liquefaction project in Manzanillo, Colima, Mexico. Said move will increase planned production capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 9 MTPA across 3 phases. 

Under the revised plan, Phase 1 will deliver 3 MTPA of capacity, Phase 2 will bring total capacity to 6 MTPA, and Phase 3 will achieve 9 MTPA, Gato Negro LNG announced on 10 Sep. 2025 in an official statement. 

Gato Negro said project has secured binding letters of intent for LNG offtake, natural gas supply, and the use of existing pipeline infrastructure. 

Additionally, the company said most required permits in both Mexico and the US have been obtained, and land acquisition in Manzanillo is complete. 

Gato Negro LNG is in the final stages of selecting an Engineering, Procurement, FEED, and Construction (EPFC) partner.

Gato Negro has engaged Mizuho as financial advisor. 

Commercial operations are expected to commence in 2030, Gato Negro said in the statement.
