LAC region electricity generation reached 165 TWh in Mar. 2025: OLADE

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA (Ana Sanches, Energy Analytics Institute, 17.Jul.2025, Words: 188) — Electricity generation in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) reached 165 TWh in Mar. 2025, the highest level recorded in the last 12 months, which was up 8% sequentially compared to Feb. 2025, up 5% year-over-year compared to Mar. 2024.

This, according to the latest Electricity Generation Report from the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE).

According to the report, released on 17 Jul. 2025, the predominant energy sources for the month mentioned were: hydroelectric (47.1%) and natural gas (27.4%), followed by wind energy (6.4%), solar (6.3%), oil and its derivatives (5.2%), nuclear (2.4%), mineral coal (2.7%), bioenergy (2.0%), in addition to geothermal energy, which represented 0.5%.

One of the highlights in the OLADE report was the significant growth experienced by solar energy, which rose 53% compared to the prior month.

Regarding the renewable energy rate, seven OLADE member countries have renewable energy rates above 75%, with Paraguay achieving nearly 100% renewable energy, followed by Costa Rica, Brazil, Uruguay, Venezuela, Colombia, and Belize.
