Venezuela’s ‘Black Gold’: the Petrocedeño (formerly Sincor) upgrader 

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA / HOUSTON, TEXAS (Editors at Energy Analytics Institute, 12.Jun.2025, Words: 702) — The Sincor upgrader was built in an area of over 200 hectares with a production capacity of 200,000 barrels per day (b/d) of extra heavy crude oil (EHCO) of an average density of 8.3° API. This EHCO was converted or upgraded into Zuata Sweet (32° API). During the conversion process, 6,000 tons of coke and 900 tons of sulfur were also obtained daily. 

UPGRADING TECHNOLOGIES 

Sincor, which originally partnered Total Venezuela (47% WI), Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. or PDVSA (38% WI) and Statoil Venezuela (15% WI), selected the most convenient option from the technological point of view.
