MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (Fidencio Casillas, Energy Analytics Institute, 6.Mar.2025) — Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo said her country was treated with great respect during her call with US president Donald Trump. The end result: Mexico will not be required to pay tariffs on products that fall within the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA).
However, the deal is only valid until 2 Apr. 2025, the date the US is slated to announce reciprocal tariffs for all countries.
“Mexico was treated with great respect. And we reached this agreement that really benefits both countries,” Sheinbaum said on 6 Mar. 2025 during her mañanera or daily morning press briefing, which was delayed until after her call with her US counterpart.
The benefits of the agreement will see continued collaboration and cooperation on different issues and at the same time within the framework of respect between both countries, Sheinbaum said.

“I told him: We have good results, President Trump. Why do you now want these tariffs? How are we going to continue cooperating, collaborating, with something that damages the people of Mexico?” Sheinbaum said.
