(Fidencio Casillas, Energy Analytics Institute, 14.Jan.2025) — Amazon Web Services (AWS) plans to invest $5bn in Querétaro state in Mexico. The decision will generate over 7,000 employment opportunities each year, according to Mexico’s Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard.

AWS’ investment in Mexico in 15 years will contribute $10bn to Mexico’s gross domestic product (GDP), Ebrard said 14 Jan. 2025 during his participation in the daily media briefing or mañanera hosted by Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

“We are here to stay,” AWS Latin America president Paula Bellezia said during the briefing.

Querétaro was selected for its central location, Bellezia said, adding that Mexico was a great location to develop AWS’ digital technology potential.

“It is very important to make investments in Mexico … not just over the short-term but over the long-term,” Bellezia said.

Sheinbaum said AWS’ investment was important in terms of generating employment in Mexico as well as technological talent.
