Petrobras Starts SNOX Unit at Abreu e Lima Refinery

(Energy Analytics Institute, 19.Dec.2024) — Petrobras commenced operation of the atmospheric emissions reduction unit (SNOX) at the Abreu e Lima refinery (RNEST).

Reduced emissions at RNEST — located in the city of Ipojuca, in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco — will allow the refinery to boost its current processing capacity to 115,000 barrels per day (b/d) from 88,000 b/d, an increase of 27,000 b/d. The increase is in compliance with the emissions limit set by the local environmental authority, Petrobras said 19 Dec. 2024 in an official statement.

The SNOX is the first emissions reduction unit in refining, both in Brazil and in the Americas. The unit has capability to transform sulfur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) into sulfuric acid, and add a new product to Petrobras’ portfolio. The produced acid, among other uses, is an important input for the treatment and generation of drinking water, Petrobras said.

In the process of eliminating SOx, the unit also produces energy in the form of steam, which will be used in the refinery facilities, reducing the consumption of gas for energy production and contributing to making RNEST more energy efficient, Petrobras said.

Revamp works

Petrobras said preparations are also underway to start the Revamp (expansion) works of Train 1, which will 1) increase the refinery’s capacity by 15,000 b/d, 2) improve the flow of light products, and 3) enhance the processing capacity of pre-salt oil. The Revamp works of Train 1 are expected to be completed in the first-quarter 2025.

Petrobras also looks to start the procurement process to complete the works of Train 2, which will add 130,000 b/d to RNEST’s capacity.
