Petrobras Inks Protocol of Intent with CSN, Eyes Hydrogen Plant in Paraná

(Energy Analytics Institute, 19.Dec.2024) — Petrobras inked a Protocol of Intent with a group company dedicated to innovation projects.

The agreement between Petrobras and the companies Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional S.A. (CSN) and CSN Inova Soluções S.A., represents a first step towards structuring a business partnership aimed at setting up a low-carbon hydrogen plant on a commercial scale in Paraná, the Rio de Janeiro-based company said 19 Dec. 2024 in an official statement.

The CSN Group is one of the largest integrated steel complexes in the world, and is present in 17 Brazilian states and operates in several other countries, such as Germany, Portugal, the US and Switzerland. CSN Group has among its assets an integrated steel plant; 5 industrial units, 2 of which are abroad; iron ore, limestone, dolomite and tin mines; a flat steel distributor; port terminals; stakes in railroads; and stakes in hydroelectric plants.

Low-carbon hydrogen can be used in industrial processes or as fuel and will be obtained through the electrolysis of water from renewable sources of electricity. The initiative aims to support the decarbonization efforts of CSN and Petrobras’ operations and products, the Brazilian energy giant said.

Execution of the Protocol of Intent is in line with the Petrobras’ Strategic Plan 2050 and Business Plan 2025-2029. Both plans aim to prepare Petrobras to lead the fair energy transition, reducing its emissions and expanding the supply of more sustainable products.
