Doubts around Planta Centro restart of Unit 6

CARACAS, VENEZUELA (By Piero Stewart, Editores Latin Petroleum, 5.Oct.2026, Words: 216) — The restart of operations at Unit 6 of the Planta Centro power plant represents the possibility of adding 600 megawatts (MW) to the National Electric System.

However, it also raises questions about the conditions under which it will operate and its technical risks, El Carabobeño reported on 5 Oct. 2026.

Venezuela’s minister of electric power Rolando Alcalá announced the unit would be back online in the coming days.

It is Venezuela’s largest thermoelectric unit.

Its return could alleviate the pressure on a system with a deficit evident in the daily power outages faced by Venezuelans in the interior of the country.

However, if this promise is fulfilled, transparency must prevail.

This is the view of JosĂ© Aguilar, an engineer specializing in electrical generation systems.

According to the daily, he warns Units 5 and 6 of Planta Centro, with a combined capacity of 1,040 MW, were adapted to operate on gas without having been tested or certified after the modification.
