El Niño could intensify drought and water scarcity in Mexico

MONTERREY, MEXICO (By Isaac Silvestre, Editores Latin Petroleum, 18.Aug.2026, Words: 300) — The accelerated arrival of El Niño could intensify drought and water scarcity in Mexico, jeopardizing the ecological balance, food security, and economy.

Specialists warn the North American country must prepare for extreme weather conditions.

The impact will be uneven: while the north would face prolonged droughts and temperatures exceeding 45°C, the Pacific coast could experience more cyclones and intense rainfall, El Financiero reported on 18 Aug. 2026.

Experts point out this does not mean greater water availability, but rather a possible scenario of droughts and floods.

The crisis also threatens the agricultural sector, with potential crop losses, higher production costs, and increased food prices, the daily said.

Given this scenario, specialists propose measures such as rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation, and wastewater treatment to address the scarcity.
