MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (By Fidencio Casillas, Editores Latin Petroleum, 24.Sep.2026, Words: ) — Over 100 Mexican and international scientists have spoken out against the production and transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Gulf of California.
This, they argue, owing to its industrialization which poses a “direct, existential, and unacceptable” risk to one of the world’s most important marine ecosystems, Critica reported on 24 Sep. 2026.

In a statement published in the newspaper Reforma, specialists dedicated to the study and conservation of marine ecosystems called on the Mexican and US governments to reject the LNG projects planned for the coast of Sonora.
The scientists specifically pointed to Saguaro Energía LNG, planned for Puerto Libertad, and Amigo LNG, in Guaymas.
Both projects involve receiving gas obtained through fracking in the US Permian Basin, transporting it via pipeline to the Gulf of California, converting it into LNG, and later shipping it to Asia.
According to the statement, the fuel would be transported in ships approximately 274m long, equivalent to 900ft, which would increase maritime traffic in a region inhabited by numerous vulnerable species.
