bpTT gets first gas from Mento offshore Trinidad’s SE coast, eyes Coconut

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA (By Piero Stewart, Energy Analytics Institute, 29.May.2025, Words: 361) — bp Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT) said its Mento development has safely delivered first natural gas through connection of the initial discovery well.

And, bpTT — owned by bp (70% working interest) and Repsol (30% WI) — said the drilling campaign for the remaining 7 gross wells on the platform will now begin.

Mento is among a number of offshore gas projects expected to add to Trinidad and Tobago’s overall gas production profile in coming years.

The twin-island nation reported average gas production of 2.531 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in 2024, down 2% compared to 2.587 Bcf/d in 2023. However, this compares to average gas production that peaked at 4.515 Bcf/d in Feb. 2010.

“For bpTT, this represents our second start up this year and it is tangible proof of the benefits of partnering with others to bring much needed gas into production,” bpTT president David Campbell announced on 29 May 2025 in an official company statement.

“The bpTT/EOG partnership is progressing well as we continue to work on our next joint venture project Coconut,” Campbell said. The Coconut gas development is expected to start-up in 2027, according to bpTT.

Mento

Mento is a joint venture (JV) between EOG Resources Trinidad Ltd (50% WI) and bpTT (50% WI), with EOG as the operator.

The development features a 12-slot, attended facility located in acreage jointly licensed by bpTT and EOG off Trinidad’s southeast coast.

The Mento platform was built at the TOFCO fabrication yard, La Brea, Trinidad.

Mento is 1 of the developments delivered through the JV between bpTT and EOG. Previous developments were: EMZ (2011), Sercan (2016) and Banyan (2017).

Mento is 1 of bp’s 10 major projects expected to start up worldwide between 2025-2027 and announced earlier this year as part of bp’s strategy to grow upstream. Production from Mento will make a significant contribution towards the 250,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) combined peak net production expected from these 10 projects, bpTT said.
