CERAWeek: Petrobras Eyes Subsea-to-Shore for Gas Offshore Colombia, Sylvia Anjos Says

HOUSTON, TEXAS (Pietro D. Pitts, Energy Analytics Institute, 11.Mar.2025) — Petrobras plans to commercialize its natural gas discoveries offshore Colombia using subsea-to-shore installations, which will not require use of a platform, Petrobras executive officer for exploration and production Sylvia Anjos said on 11 Mar. 2025 at CERAWeek by S&P Global

“We just finished the formation test that gives us very good data. Production is very efficient, so we are very happy, so it confirms what we thought. And now we want to take the rig to another location for another well,” Anjos said during an informal chat with the media.

The Colombian production capacity can go to 13 million cubic meters per day (MMcm/d), she confirmed, responding to a question from Energy Analytics Institute (EAI).

“The gas offshore Colombia [found by Ecopetrol and Petrobras] will be developed without a platform and be very economical and very low emission and provide all the gas that Colombia needs for the next 10 years. The first 6 Tcf will be enough for Colombia and if you continue exploration, as we are doing, probably we will have more gas for export. The first thing is to provide Colombia with the gas they need,” Anjos said.

With the evaluation of the Sirius-2 well results, gas volumes exceeding 6 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) in place (VGIP) were confirmed at the site. This finding could increase Colombia’s current reserves by 200%, Petrobras said in early Dec. 2024.

Petrobras recently said the gas discoveries in the Uchuva-1 and Uchuva-2 wells were renamed Sirius-1 and Sirius-2.

Other activities outside Brazil

Anjos said Petrobras’ priority was to replenish its reserves. Brazil is Petrobras’ priority but the company is looking at other countries.

“In South America, Argentina is the place we are looking at some of the areas and also in Africa. We are doing what’s most convenient and economical for our portfolio,” Anjos said.

Regarding Argentina and when asked whether Petrobras was looking for oil or gas, she said: “we love oil.”

“But the gas is maybe interesting because we have a pipeline from Bolivia to Brazil and we are doing business with Argentina to bring the gas to Brazil,” Anjos said.

In Africa, Petrobras aims to drill 2 wells in 2025, Anjos said. One in San Tome in Jul. or Aug. and another in South Africa in the next quarter.
