(Piero Stewart, Energy Analytics Institute, 30.Dec.2024) — The government of the Caribbean country Trinidad and Tobago declared a state of public emergency.
The notice from the Office of the Prime Minister dated 30 Dec. 2024 (attached below) warned that “the circumstances warranting the declaration of the public emergency are based on the advice of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to the National Security Council of heightened criminal activity which endangers the public safety.”

Trinidad and Tobago is home to around 1.5mn citizens, according to Worldometer. The twin-island country, located just off the northern coast of Venezuela, boasts an active crude oil and natural sector and is home to the massive 4-train 14.8 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) Atlantic LNG export facility as well as numerous ammonia and methanol plants.
The government statement is likely to put the energy sector on heightened alert to implement initiatives to protect its workers and employees, and could potentially result in higher security costs.
