Sheinbaum Gov’t to Defend Calica Protected Natural Areas

(Fidencio Casillas, Energy Analytics Institute, 5.Dec.2024) — Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo said her government will defend the Calizas Industriales del Carmen (Calica) area declared as a Protected Natural Area (ANP by its Spanish acronym) by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).

“They will never use the Mayan paradise as a mine again,” Sheinbaum said 5 Dec. 2024 during her daily morning conference or briefing with the media.

“Calica has caused enormous environmental damage in the area, the decision that the president made then was to declare it a Protected Natural Area and with it the mining work in that area was closed. It is an environmental issue, above all,” Sheinbaum said.

“For any company, whether American or Canadian, the same environmental standards that they have in their countries have to be the rules that they comply with in our country,” Sheinbaum said. “They cannot break an environmental standard that is part of the USMCA,” Sheinbaum said, adding that her government would defend the country against any such environmental abuses.
