(Energy Analytics Institute, 26.Nov.2024) — Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo responded to accusations made by US president-elect Donald Trump about Mexico regarding immigration and fentanyl trafficking. She also responding to Trump’s threats to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico, as well as Canada, while also warning of a potential tariff war.
Sheinbaum responded 26 Nov. 2024 during her daily briefing with the media to the accusations in a letter addressed to Trump. Sheinbaum said the letter in its entirety, which she read out loud to the media, would soon be sent to Trump and his team in the US.
“You should also be aware that … 70% of the illegal weapons seized from criminals in Mexico come from your country, we do not produce the weapons, we do not produce the synthetic drugs,” Sheinbaum said in the letter.
Regarding Trump’s comments on imposing higher tariffs on Mexico, Sheinbaum said that tariffs imposed by the US would likely be met with tariffs as well, which would not be good for either country.

“President Trump, it is not with threats or tariffs that the migration phenomenon or drug consumption in the United States will be addressed. Cooperation and reciprocal understanding are required to address these great challenges,” Sheinbaum said.
The US and Mexico are major trading partners. Both countries are seemingly interdependent on the other.
“One tariff will come in response to another, and so on … such that we put common companies at risk, yes common ones, for example, some companies that export from Mexico to the United States are General Motors, Stellantis and Ford Motors Company. Why impose a tax that puts them at risk? It is not acceptable and would cause inflation and job losses in the United States and Mexico,” Sheinbaum said.

Sheinbaum said members of her staff would go into greater detail on 27 Nov. 2024 about the impact a tariff war between the two North American trading partners would have mainly on the US.
“I am convinced that the economic strength of North America lies in maintaining our commercial society, so we can continue to be more competitive against other economic blocks. I consider that dialogue is the best path for understanding, peace and prosperity of our nations. I hope our teams can meet soon,” she said.
