(Energy Analytics Institute, 21.Jan.2022) — Colombia’s President Iván Duque and the country’s Mines and Energy Minister Diego Mesa finally inaugurated Isagen‘s Guajira I project.

Guajira I is the largest wind farm in Colombia and the first built in more than 17 years in the country after Jepírachi came into operation in April 2004, Colombia’s Mines and Energy Ministry announced 21 Jan. 2022 in an official stmt.

Construction of the project ended in Dec. 2021. It has 10 wind turbines, each 78 meters high, and with capacity to generate 20MW of clean energy, equivalent to the consumption of 33,295 Colombian families.

Guajira I’s functioning will translate into a reduction of 136 tons of CO2, the ministry said.

Due to its privileged geographical location, La Guajira has great potential for power generation with non-conventional renewable sources. The wind speed in the department is twice the world average and the radiation is 60% higher than that recorded worldwide.

As part of Colombia’s energy transition policy, 16 wind farms are envisioned for the La Guajira region, requiring investments estimated at $10bn pesos and with potential to generate approximately 11,000 jobs.
