(Energy Analytics Institute, Piero Stewart, 20.Dec.2019) — Operations at the Shushufindi-Quito poly-duct pipeline have been halted due to a fissure detected in the Baeza sector, which lead to the spill of base gasoline.
Environmental protection and restoration equipment as well as personnel have been deployed to the location to contain the fuel and activate remediation actions to prevent contamination to vegetation, EP PetroEcuador announced 20 Dec. in an official statement.
The state entity continues to monitor water in downstream tributaries and near the populations from El Chaco, according to details revealed in the statement.
EP PetroEcuador didn’t provide details regarding the potential gasoline spilled during the incident.
Repairs to the pipeline are expected to last around 24 hours, as personnel from the state entity replace the affected section of the infrastructure. As a result, operations at the poly-duct will remain suspended until all work is completed, EP PetroEcuador said.
The Shushufindi-Quito poly-duct supplies liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to the Oyambaro terminal and gasoline to the Beaterio terminal. The terminals have enough stock to supply fuel demand in the northern part of Ecuador, the company said.
