HOUSTON, TEXAS (Ofelia Paredes, Energy Analytics Institute, 18.Jan.2025) — Residents around the so-called energy capital of the world, Houston, are preparing for below freezing weather that could linger around for 4-5 days, the National Weather Service (NWS) said 18 Jan. 2025 in statements on its website.
Temperatures in Houston are expected to initially dip below 32°F or freezing late on 19 Jan. 2024. The lows during the early part of next week are expected to be in the 20s, according to the NWS, while the highs will be close to 35°F.
The NWS said that on 21 Jan. 2025 there was a chance for “snow showers, freezing rain, and sleet, mainly before noon,” on the said date.
Houston resident prepare for winter storm 2025
Many Houston residents who remember winter storm Uri (spring 2021) and Hurricane Beryl (summer 2024) are preparing for possible power outages. Many are stocking up on foodstuffs, covering water pipes and filling up their vehicles with petrol. Long queues at the petrol stations were seemingly the norm in certain parts of Houston over the start of the weekend.
During residential power outages many vehicles are used because of their heating systems and ability to provide electrical charges to mobile devices used for communication purposes.
In Feb. 2021, Uri dumped record snow across Texas, with the frigid temperatures and severe weather impacting all 254 counties in the state. An estimated 4.5mn Texans lost power, according to details from the Texas Oil & Gas Association (TXOGA) while the ERCOT natural gas grid that shipped piped-gas to Mexico was also temporarily out of service.
Snow and ice from Uri coupled with ultra-low temperatures caused widespread road closures and dangerous travel conditions across Texas.
