BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA (By Ana Sanches, Editores Latin Petroleum, 28.Sep.2026, Words: 312) — Bolivia ranks 7th among the highest diesel prices in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region, after the fuel rose from Bs 9.80 to Bs 17.95 per liter, according to an analysis by economic analyst Fernando Romero.
The increase, established by Supreme Decree 5716, reaches 83.2% and places the price at $1.63 per liter, very close to the world average of $1.66/liter recorded by Global Petrol Prices as of 21 Sep. 2026.
According to data used by Romero, select prices across the LAC region show varied levels:
— Cuba: $2/liter,
— Belize: $1.964,
— Peru: $1.952,
— Jamaica: $1.885,
— Guatemala: $1.749,
— the Bahamas: $1.686,
— Bolivia: $1.63
— Mexico: $1.595/liter);
— Barbados: $1.552/liter; and
— Costa Rica: $1.543/liter,
The analysis also indicates the Bolivian price is lower than that recorded in the US ($1.73/liter) and Canada ($1.95/liter), El Diario reported on 28 Sep. 2026.
In the international space, it places Bolivia above China, where a liter costs $1.19; India ($1.03/liter); and Japan ($1.01/liter).
Germany, France, and the UK register higher prices, at $2.79/liter, $2.73/liter, and $2.61/liter, respectively.
Romero believes the adjustment reduces part of the difference caused by the subsidy, but warns that it also increases the country’s exposure to international oil price fluctuations and exchange rate behavior. Romero uses Brent crude above $100 per barrel and WTI close to $95 per barrel as a benchmark to warn that an international scenario of high prices could increase energy costs and generate new inflationary pressures.
Exchange rate behavior constitutes another risk factor in his analysis. With the dollar at Bs 12.22 used as a reference, further depreciation could be passed on to the price of fuels, food, spare parts, machinery, and imported supplies, according to Romero.
