TotalEnergies Welcomes Launch of Official Investigations in Mozambique

HOUSTON, TEXAS (Editors at Energy Analytics Institute, 26.Mar.2025) — TotalEnergies said the Mozambican Commission on Human Rights (CNDH) will conduct its own investigation following allegations of human rights abuses raised by media outlets in 2024 that would have been committed by members of Mozambique’s Defense and Security Forces in the Afungi Peninsula in the Cabo Delgado province around the summer of 2021.

“TotalEnergies welcomes the announcement made on 4 Mar. 2025 by the Attorney General of Mozambique who confirmed that a criminal investigation had been opened into these allegations. Mozambique LNG will fully cooperate with the authorities in this respect,” the French company said on 26 Mar. 2025 in an official statement. 

On the occasion of his meetings in late Jan. 2025 with the new authorities of Mozambique, notably the president Daniel Chapo, TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné stressed the importance of such an investigation being conducted in accordance with the rule of law and sovereignty of the Mozambican state.

TotalEnergies, which holds a 26.5% interest in Mozambique LNG, asked the Mozambican authorities in Nov. 2024 to open a formal investigation into such allegations, in order to ascertain what happened.

Rovuma LNG Phase 1 represents a significant development for the African country and provides a significant opportunity for economic growth. The project includes liquefaction and export of natural gas extracted from the Offshore Area 4 fields off the Afungi Peninsula in Mozambique.
