HOUSTON, TEXAS (Editors at Energy Analytics Institute, 20.Feb.2025) â Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) is exploring and investing in innovative technology solutions and projects to reduce emissions from its locomotive operations and support the company’s long-term sustainability objectives.
As part of plan, CPKC is making strides with its hydrogen locomotive program which has swiftly progressed from initial movement trials to recording over 6,000 miles in freight service testing by the end of 2024, the company said 20 Feb. 2025 in an official statement.
In early 2025, the company eyes doubling the size of its hydrogen test fleet to include 3 additional locomotives and an added tender car. Thereafter, CPKC looks to add further to this test fleet with 4 more locomotives planned for later in 2025.
In 2024, CPKC successfully conducting over 1,100 fueling events as part of its B20 locomotive biofuel trial in British Columbia. This initiative, in cooperation with the broader rail industry, aims to validate the operational impacts of using advanced renewable biofuel blends, the company said.
Also in 2025, the company is preparing for delivery of 100 Tier 4 diesel-electric locomotives, which are expected to reduce air pollutants and emissions and enhance fuel economy and reliability, CPKC said.
