Sheinbaum Says Southward Extension of North American Trade Deal Necessary

(Fidencio Casillas, Energy Analytics Institute, 17.Dec.2024) — Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo said unity between her country and other progressive countries in Latin America was important as well as an extension of trade deals between North America and the rest of the American continent.

Sheinbaum, speaking 17 Dec. 2024 during her “mañanera” or daily conference with the media, said it was important to have unity in various areas with other countries of Latin America.

To that end, Sheinbaum expressed her vision for wider trade integration across the Americas, as she was previously expressed by Mexico’s former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also known by his initials AMLO.

“Our vision is that the commercial agreement between the US, Canada and Mexico should be amplified to the south, which would give us a continent greater economic power and above that of any other region in the world,” Sheinbaum said, responding to questions from various media outlets.

Sheinbaum also said her recent meeting in Mexico City with Colombia’s president Gustavo Petro was just a meeting of presidents and nothing formal.

Sheinbaum said their discussion covered themes spanning from the interconnection of electric grids with clean energy to technology developments and artificial intelligence.
