Sheinbaum Says Mexico Not Looking to Boost Nuclear Energy

(Energy Analytics Institute, 10.Oct.2024) — Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said her country had no plans to boost its nuclear capacity.

“I’m not pro-nuclear because nuclear has other environmental impacts,” Sheinbaum during her 10 Oct. 2024 daily news briefing with the media.

“It doesn’t emit greenhouse gases that provoke climate change but nuclear has its risks,” she said.

Sheinbaum said there are plans for Mexico to boost its electricity generation partly with combined-cycle gas turbines, which started under Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and which will be inaugurated by her government, and partly with renewable energies, Sheinbaum said.

The electric generation plans include participation from public and private actors, she added.
