EAI NRG ED: introduction to energy journalism 101 [Houston summer 2025]

HOUSTON, TEXAS (Editors at Energy Analytics Institute, 20.Jun.2025, Words: 440) — Despite the strong emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years, journalists continue to have a unique role to play in changing the narrative around the global energy sector which uses fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) as well as renewable sources (wind, solar and others) to generate energy.

To this end, Energy Analytics Institutes‘ (EAI) free journalism workshop series is meant to help emerging journalists — covering the energy sector in particular and finance, economics and politics in general — address key issues and tell engaging stories to audiences worldwide.

EAI’s journalism 101 primer is an 1-hour in-person workshop that gives journalists a solid foundation in the usage of a variety of tools to tell their stories.

The workshop covers the following:

The basics of a 4 paragraph informative story:

— themes (what? why? so what?), details, size and scope;

— headlines, leads, reinforcing the lead, quotations, details, nut paragraphs, background around the subject or topic;

Types of stories: news driven, scoops, or data driven:

— ways to procure news: sources, news releases, social media;

— the anatomy of a scoop: leaked information and sources;

— finding and negotiating for data, vetting, cleaning and analyzing data, and ensuring solid data analysis;

Ethics in journalism:

— the vital role of ethics in journalism, focusing on accuracy, fairness, and impartiality and importantly attribution to “why and how you know what you know”;

Tools to storytelling:

— photography, videos, audio, screenshots, documents, data, and sources;

Leveraging social media:

— Use of different platforms to reach and engage with audiences;

LinkedIn, X, Instagram, Facebook, company websites, and Google search alerts

This workshop is a prerequisite for a longer, more in-depth 2 hour course that includes 6 practice stories (instead of a certificate) to be published on the EAI website and across its social media platforms.
