Colombian market suffering gas shortage that represents 7.6% of demand

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA (Piero Stewart, Energy Analytics Institute, 9.Apr.2025) — The Colombian market is currently suffering a natural gas shortage that represents 7.6% of the country’s total gas demand. This, after the Andean country lost its ability to fulfill its domestic demand in Dec. 2024 and began to rely on imports.

Of the gas shortage, 4% is covered with imported gas, while the remaining 3.6% is covered by gas released by thermal power plants that no longer need to use gas to generate electricity owing to improved weather conditions.

However, Naturgás president Luz Stella Murgas warned that by Sep. 2025 the former percentage could rise to 6.5% once the Cartagena regasification plant increases its import capacity by 25 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d). The plant will add another 58 MMcf/d of import capacity in 2027, the daily Colombian daily El Tiempo reported on 9 Apr. 2025, citing Murgas.
