Gerdau and Petrobras Ink Deal for Low-carbon Business Studies

(Petrobras, 9.Sep.2024) — Petrobras has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gerdau S.A., aimed at evaluating commercial opportunities and potential partnerships in decarbonization projects; low carbon fuels; hydrogen and its products; carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS); as well as R&D projects related to the integrity of materials in a marine environment and natural gas powered “direct reduction” steelmaking.

The direct reduction process is an alternative to the conventional steel production process, which uses natural gas instead of coal.

The MoU is non-binding, with a term of two years, and is aligned with the company’s strategic guidelines, which include initiatives to decarbonize operations and promote the energy transition.
