(Petrobras, 2.Sep.2024) — “Petrobras and CSN entered into a contract to supply natural gas to the CNS plant situated in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). This steelworks’ migration to the free environment has Petrobras as its chief supplier among a pool of suppliers. The new partnership in the natural gas market is focused on a long-term relationship and the creation of new opportunities attached to the companies’ decarbonization targets. Petrobras signed and amended natural gas supply contracts in the free consumer category in the second quarter alone, with an approximate volume of 940 thousand m³/d.
“Petrobras and CSN formed their first business relationship in the natural gas free market, betting on the development of solutions that make for an open, competitive, transparent, and sustainable trading environment, which will constantly grow in Brazil and serve as a step toward the joint assessment of new decarbonization and energy transition solutions,” said Maurício Tolmasquim, Petrobras’s Energy Transition and Sustainability Director.
Based on this milestone, Petrobras and CSN will develop optimizations to use natural gas consumption in other processes according to the companies’ energy transition targets. The contract with Petrobras stipulates the migration of the President Vargas Power Plant (UPV) in Volta Redonda (RJ), to the natural gas free market.
“With this move, CSN has become the foremost Brazilian industrial consumer of natural gas operating in the free market, contracting not only the molecule but also the outgoing transportation, following its strategy of actively operating in the natural gas segment as a means to bring down costs and add value to the company,” affirms Rogério Pizeta, CNS’s Energy Director.
