Guzmán Says YPF’s Recuperation “Was an Act of Sovereignty”

Immediate Frontier

(Energy Analytics Institute, 16.Apr.2022) — The recovery of Argentina’s state oil giant YPF some 10 years ago was an act of sovereignty that changed the dynamics of the sector and made the Vaca Muerta formation relevant, according to Argentina’s Economic Minister Martín Maximiliano Guzmán.

The most relevant transformation was the notable increase in investment to start productive development of Vaca Muerta, the world’s second largest unconventional gas reserve and fourth unconventional oil reserve, Guzmán announced 16 April 2022 on Instagram.

The minister said YPF was going through a remarkable recovery process with an investment program of $3.7bn earmarked, the company’s largest in the last five years after going through a phase of “disinvestment and decline since the end of 2015,” he added.

“When YPF grows the entire national energy industry is strengthened,” Guzmán said, adding that Argentina has a great opportunity to accelerate energy development, which would be transformational to the country’s productive system and economic stability.
