(Energy Analytics Institute, Piero Stewart, 11.Apr.2020) — Colombia’s state oil company Ecopetrol was forced to halt work at its Barrancabermeja refinery due to the death of an employee due to coronavirus.

“We made the decision to shut down the UOPII cracking unit for comprehensive disinfection,” reported Colombia media outlet Caracol, citing Ecopetrol Refining Manager Carlos Guillermo García Londoño.

“This measure is in addition to others that will result in the refinery removing 80% of the personnel at the refinery,” he added.

In Barrancabermeja, three more cases of coronavirus have already been detected related to the deceased Ecopetrol employee. As a result, three epidemiologists visited the refinery to examine the risk factors, while the employees who had contact with the deceased have been isolated, according to Caracol.

“We have 30 beds arranged for our workers to try to contain the virus, ”said García Londoño.

While the plant is shutdown for up to a month, fuel production at the Barrancabermeja refinery is expected to fall by 55%, the media reported.
