(Energy Analytics Institute, Aaron Simonsky, 12.Nov.2019) — The company UTE announced it will invest $500 million in the Punta del Tigre B 540-megawatt combined cycle plant located in the department of San José.

The plant — situated near the Punta del Tigre A plant — can use two types of fuel; however, natural gas is more convenient due to the less wear it causes to machines and for environmental reasons, reported online media LaRed21.

Total power for the plant will be distributed between two gas turbines of 175 MW each in addition to a 190 MW steam turbine. An estimated 8 MW of the total amount is used in auxiliary consumption, the media reported, citing a statement from UTE.

The investment marks the largest in the last 40 years by a Uruguayan public entity.
