(Energy Analytics Institute, 20.Jul.2022) — Colombia’s Mines and Energy Minister Diego Mesa visited the Gorgon-2 exploration well offshore the South America country and boasted results to come.

“We expect positive results in the coming months,” Mesa said 20 July 2022 in a LinkedIn post, adding that the offshore Colombia region offered great potential for both oil and gas.

Mesa’s comments came after a visit to Transocean’s Thalassa Deepwater vessel, which is being used to drill the Gorgon 2 exploration well offshore Colombia. Partners in the Gorgon-2 well include Shell (operator) and state-owned Ecopetrol.

The well is chasing gas potential that could be north of 6-7 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), Ecopetrol’s President Felipe Bayón told an Energy Analytics Institute correspondent earlier this year during CERAweek in Houston.

Gorgon-2 is located 70 kilometers away from the Colombian coast. The well is being drilled in water depths of around 2,400 meters and targeting reservoirs more than 2,000 meters beneath the seabed, Mesa said.
