(Energy Analytics Institute, Piero Stewart, 21.Nov.2019) — An energy storage system comprised of batteries of 2.2 megawatt hours was inaugurated on 21 Nov. 2019 on the island of San Cristobal, province of Galapagos.
Construction of the new 1-megawatt photovoltaic power plant will cost an estimated $5.8 million, Ecuador’s Ministry of Energy and Non-Renewable Natural Resources (MENRNR) announced 21 Nov. in an official statement.
Funding for the plant will come from the Korean government through the Institute for the Advancement of KIAT Technology, in cooperation with the Galápagos Provincial Electric Company (ElecGalapagos SA), an entity that will invest $1 million for the adaptation of the land.
Implementation of this new energy system will benefit an estimated 8,000 inhabitants of San Cristóbal, in addition, it will prevent emission of 946 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere and the burning of 118,000 gallons of diesel, MENRNR said.
Construction work is expected to be completed in December 2020, the ministry said.
